City of Carovigno
The traditions of this town go back centuries, and are still evidenced and celebrated by the many local festas celebrating the life of saints, the madonna, food, wine, and the famous flag throwers.
Carovigno is built on a hill, and is a small town, that is relatively unspoilt by Tourism. There are fantastic bars and restaurants. In the centro storico it also boasts a Michelin Star restaurant. During the summer months there is always something to do in the centre, with music, live bands, dancing, and much more. There is also a castle, which hosts many events, of classical music, street artists and food festivals.
Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve blissfully free from development, with its rugged shores is a protected area, and allows its visitors to enjoy and escape from the over developed beach resorts. There are plenty of opportunities to observe plant and animal species usually scarce in this part of the world. A mini shuttle service runs from the car parks, but to find your spot on the beach, there may be some walking involved.
The sea is clear, clean and warm. There is a visitor centre 3km inland at Serranova which organizes nature walks, cycle trekking. There are also guided snorkelling trips. Torre Guaceto is also one of Puglia’s top locations for kite surfing. There are water parks, and a zoo in Fasano. Plenty to do if you have young children. Ostuni boasts many restaurants with traditional Pugliese cuisine, with roast and grilled meat and tasty tangy pasta dishes to suit every pallate. Ostuni has also one of the oldest Franciscan convents dating back to 1304. The Cathedral is located on the highest point of the city, which was built between 1435 and 1495, and has a beautiful Gothic facade. Far away you will see the white town perched on a hill, crowned by the cathedral with its colorful dome. The town of Ostuni is surrounded by a medieval fortress wall, and as you meander through the streets, you may stumble upon hidden cafe bars and restaraunts. Definitely worth visiting at night, as there is a buzz of excitement, and people sipping coffee and drinking Spritz – it definitely has a cosmopolitan feel and you will take away the memories which will last forever……….
A town in the south of Italy that is not yet on the tourist map, and which, if you are planning a trip to Puglia, is a town not to be missed, as you will definitely see the ‘real Italy’. Steeped in history, with beautiful beaches, local traditions, which remain intact and are still celebrated each year with local festas.
Carovigno is an all year round town, with many bars, restaurants, and supermarkets. Whilst the town is relatively un-spoilt by tourism, the locals, welcome foreign visitors. If you want to visit the real Italy that is not overrun with tourists, then Carovigno is the place to visit. From the outskirts of the town, you will need to drive into the centre to really see the traditions of this historical town.
Now for a little bit of history ……… Carovigno, from latin “Carbina”, is a country in the province of Brindisi with around 17000 inhabitants, and situated only 5 km from the Adriatic Coast and on altitude maxim of 172 meters above sea level.
About the name, there exists various hypotheses: one which is said to derive from greek “Karpene” that means “fertile ground”
There are two statues which symbolise the history of Carovigno and are located on two roundabouts on the main road from Ostuni to Carovigno.
The two symbols of Carovigno are:
“Sbandieratori” flag throwers and • dolphin (represent in the emblem of the town).
For “sbandieratori” the dolphin and lastly for its defensive towers and beaches, called also “Salento’s city which means between towers and sea”.
